A UV-C lamp is only as good as its installation and upkeep. This guide covers the steps we follow and why tubes need to be replaced on schedule.
Installation
- Brief: you send the space type, room size or duct and unit dimensions, and airflow.
- Site check: we confirm the mounting position, power supply and access, and how to keep light away from people.
- Installation: wall lamps are fixed with the grid facing the area to be treated. In-duct lamps are fitted through an opening in the unit and earthed to the unit body, as the manual describes.
- Commissioning and training: we set up timers or remote controls where the model has them and brief the staff who will operate and maintain the lamp.

Why tubes need scheduled replacement
A UV-C tube keeps glowing after it has lost output. After the rated life the lamp still shines in the same purple-blue colour, but the ultraviolet intensity is lower and the treatment is less effective. For the in-duct HEP 36WPL/SPH the stated tube life is 18,000 hours. Some models, such as the K72W/SP, count down the remaining hours with a sensor light.
Maintenance and disposal
- Cleaning and inspection of the lamp, grille and mounting, by instructed persons.
- Tube replacement with the lamp disconnected from power, by trained people only.
- Broken or damaged tubes contain mercury and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Frequently asked questions
How often should tubes be changed?
When the rated life in the manual for your model has passed, for example 18,000 hours for the HEP 36WPL/SPH. Send us the model and hours and we will advise.
Can we change tubes ourselves?
Only trained staff should, following the manual and with power disconnected.
Do you install in existing air conditioning systems?
Yes in principle. Send the unit type and duct dimensions and we will confirm what is possible before quoting.
